For example, you are drawing something and you need a&nbsp;red pencil that lies on&nbsp;the table.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The indefinite article a&nbsp;\/ an&nbsp;indicates that at&nbsp;the moment we&nbsp;are referring to&nbsp;an&nbsp;object in&nbsp;general:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00abCan you give me&nbsp;a&nbsp;pencil?\u00bb&nbsp;\u2014 We&nbsp;need any pencil, no&nbsp;matter which one. The hospital is&nbsp;located on&nbsp;Pauls St.\u00ab);<br>\u2013 before a&nbsp;noun with an&nbsp;ordinal number (the fifth accord) or&nbsp;a&nbsp;superlative adjective (the best place in&nbsp;the world);<br>\u2013 the name of&nbsp;the sea, ocean, river, desert, mountain ranges, groups of&nbsp;islands, the names of&nbsp;cinemas, hotels and restaurants are mentioned (The Pacific ocean, The Congo);<br>\u2013 we&nbsp;are talking of&nbsp;nouns that denote a&nbsp;species or&nbsp;a&nbsp;class of&nbsp;objects (Scientists believe that the jellyfish appeared on&nbsp;Earth much earlier than the dinosaurs);<br>\u2013 we&nbsp;are talking about the parts of&nbsp;the world (the eastern part, the western part);<br>\u2013 we&nbsp;are mentioning all the members of&nbsp;a&nbsp;certain family (The Kardashians).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to&nbsp;use the indefinite article a&nbsp;\/ an<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The indefinite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tv-english.club\/grammar-wise-episodes-2nd-season\/episode-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>&nbsp;a&nbsp;\/ an&nbsp;is&nbsp;used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 before the names of&nbsp;professions (a&nbsp;marketologist, a&nbsp;psychologist) or&nbsp;with a&nbsp;copular verb + post \/ profession \/ characteristic;<br>\u2013 when there is&nbsp;an&nbsp;undefined amount of&nbsp;something (a&nbsp;piece, a&nbsp;part, a&nbsp;bit);<br>\u2013 when something is&nbsp;mentioned for the first time;<br>\u2013 to&nbsp;express admiration or&nbsp;in&nbsp;an&nbsp;exclamatory sentence (\u00abWhat a&nbsp;life!\u00bb);<br>\u2013 with the nouns of&nbsp;time \/ distance \/ weight (\u00abThey bought a&nbsp;pound of&nbsp;apples\u00bb);<br>\u2013 after the word such (\u00abWe&nbsp;found such a&nbsp;good place\u00bb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When do&nbsp;we&nbsp;use the zero article<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a&nbsp;number of&nbsp;cases when the article is&nbsp;not used at&nbsp;all. In&nbsp;this case, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;called the zero article.
